Speech and Language Therapy
Communication is one of the core challenges for people with learning and emotional difficulties, autism or ADHD. The speech and language therapy team at Philpots Manor aim to support learners to gain meaningful communication skills which are essential for learning and developing social relationships.
As well as working alongside our class teams, supporting integration of activities and strategies to develop communication skills in all situations at school, our therapists see students in groups or on a one to one basis as required.
If your child has specific therapy needs set out on the EHCP then we will meet those needs and discuss them as part of the admissions process.
Occupational Therapy
The role of the Occupational Therapist (OT) is to work with children who have difficulties with the practical and social skills necessary for their everyday life. Occupational Therapy enables the child to be as physically, psychologically and socially independent as possible. Many students at Philpots Manor will have sensory processing difficulties which can be addressed by OT.
Students at Philpots Manor have access to universal occupational therapy interventions either individually or as part of their class and the recommendations from the therapist are integrated into every aspect of daily school life to ensure that students are able to remain regulated throughout the school day and beyond.
If your child has individual OT written into their EHCP we will be able to advise you if we can meet their needs but it will be discussed as part of the admissions process.
Drama Therapy
We have access to a drama therapist one day a week and students are referred on a case by case basis.
The therapist helps the individual explore their feelings and life experiences through drama and they help people to communicate in their own ways and meanings in their lives. Verbal and non-verbal communication is used, depending on the needs of the child.
Drama Therapy can be particularly accessible and effective for children with complex and additional needs who are often unable to express their feelings easily using words. Using creative interventions alongside talking, this therapy is flexible in responding appropriately to a child’s needs.
Students are seen for individual sessions on a weekly basis, initially for assessment and thereafter for sessions as per the therapist’s recommendation.
