After months of developing their navigation, camping, teamwork and outdoor skills, the group embarked on what would prove to be a memorable and highly successful adventure.
On departure day, the students arrived at school understandably nervous but exceptionally well prepared, bringing all the equipment required for a safe and successful expedition. Following a longer than anticipated minibus journey to the start point, the group began their first hiking section at 3:00 pm. Drawing upon the navigation skills they had carefully developed throughout their training, the students successfully navigated from checkpoint to checkpoint during a challenging four hour hike while carrying their expedition equipment.
Upon reaching the campsite, the group set up camp efficiently and prepared their evening meal using the school’s expedition stoves. Their growing confidence and independence were evident as they worked together to complete camp duties before settling down for a well-earned night’s rest under canvas.
The following morning began with an organised breakfast and campsite pack down, enabling the group to depart on time for the next stage of their journey. A 24 kilometre canoe expedition along the River Wye awaited them. Over six hours, the students travelled through some of the country’s most spectacular scenery, surrounded by an abundance of wildlife. Throughout the journey, they demonstrated excellent teamwork, communicating effectively through clear river signals, supporting one another and pacing themselves well with regular rest stops. Their positive attitude and determination ensured they completed the paddle in good spirits before undertaking a final one-kilometre hike to their wilderness campsite.
The final morning began with the dawn chorus echoing through the valley. After packing away camp, the students completed a short hike out of the valley to meet the waiting minibus for the journey home. Tired but proud of their accomplishments, the group returned to school where they received a hero’s welcome from staff and students who gathered to celebrate their success.
From start to finish, the expedition was a tremendous achievement. The students demonstrated resilience, teamwork, independence and perseverance throughout every stage of the journey. Most importantly, they returned with increased confidence, unforgettable memories and a range of lifelong skills that will continue to benefit them well beyond their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award experience.
The Silver DofE expedition was a real triumph and a fitting reward for the hard work and dedication shown by all participants throughout the year.
